Hiring for these positions is contingent on the funding decision of Young Canada Works. These criteria include being a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada; being between 16 and 30 years of age inclusively at the start of employment; and being a high school, college, CEGEP, or university student. Communications Assistant

Position Overview

Term: May 6, 2026 to August 26, 2026

Hourly wage: $17.00

35 hours/week, standard work week: Wednesday-Sunday

Dalnavert Museum is seeking a Communications Assistant for the summer period. This is an exciting opportunity for aspiring museum professionals seeking to gain practical experience in a busy history museum as well as those interested in museum communications, and wider museum operations. The successful candidate will work closely with our Museum Services Manager and Executive Director to implement the museum's communications strategies, and contribute to Dalnavert's mission to promote and protect this National Historic site in critically engaging and challenging ways. The Museum Communications Assistant will also play a key role in assisting with the delivery of daily museum operations including the delivery of tours, programs and occasional customer service tasks.

The primary tasks to be undertaken by the Communications Assistant are as follows:

  • Work with the museum team to deliver our Communications Plan including coordination and creation of newsletters, website and social media content, and the creation of promotional marketing materials as required; contribute to communication planning meetings as required.

  • Deliver exceptional frontline visitor services, including providing tours and other recurring programs, processing admissions and other sales, and responding to visitor enquiries as needed.

  • Contribute to daily museum operations including assisting with volunteer support, setting event spaces, ensuring health and safety procedures are being followed, and other standard museum operation duties as required.

Skills and Qualifications

Candidates interested in this position should demonstrate the following education, experience and/or skills:

  • University or College education in any of the following areas is preferred: Museum Studies, Education, Humanities (History, Canadian Studies, Anthropology, Art History, and Fine Arts), Communication, Marketing, Public Relations, or demonstrable skills and experience in a relevant professional sphere.

  • Experience in use of common design tools, multimedia, and related equipment/software strongly desired (e.g. Website development, Photoshop, Adobe Creative Suite, Digital Audio Recording/Editing).

  • Experience with popular social media platforms (especially Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok) in a professional sphere (can include relevant volunteer experience) and can be demonstrated with sample work; experience with social media as a brand tool an asset.

  • Demonstrated interest in Canadian historical perspectives, e.g. social and political history, built heritage, material culture, interpretation and story-telling.

  • Computer proficiency, including standard tools such as MS Office.

  • Experience working with digital photography is an asset.

  • Proficiency in spoken and written English is essential, French and/or additional language skills (including ASL and Indigenous languages) an asset.

  • Excellent oral, communication and organizational skills, accuracy, attention to detail, friendly, open to learning, self-motivated, able to work independently and as part of a team.

Note: Availability to work weekends and occasional evenings is a requirement.

Museum Assistant

Position Overview

This is an exciting opportunity for aspiring museum professionals seeking to gain practical experience in a busy history museum as well as those interested in museum interpretation, program development and delivery, and wider museum operations. The successful candidate will work closely with our Museum Services Manager and Executive Director to assist in the creation and implementation of interpretive programming, deliver exceptional visitor experiences via tours, and contribute to Dalnavert's mission to promote and protect this National Historic site in critically engaging and challenging ways. The Museum Assistant will also play a key role in planning and delivery of the annual Dalnavert Days festival.

The primary tasks to be undertaken by the Museum Programming and Communications Assistant are as follows:

  • Plan and execute a two day festival (Dalnavert Days), including a market, musical acts, family activities and tours, and refreshments.

  • Work with the museum team to deliver summer programs, as well as contributing to the design and development of future programs.

  • Deliver exceptional frontline visitor services, including providing tours and other recurring programs, processing admissions and other sales, and responding to visitor enquiries as needed.

  • Contribute to daily museum operations including assisting with volunteer support, setting event spaces, ensuring health and safety procedures are being followed, and other standard museum operation duties as required.

Museum Services Coordinator

Position Overview

One-year contract (May 2026-May 2027)

Hourly wage: $18.30

12–15 hours/week, schedule to be determined. Some weekend availability may be required.

Dalnavert Museum is seeking a Museum Services Coordinator for a one-year, part-time contract. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in gaining practical experience in the daily operations of a busy historic house museum. The successful candidate will work closely with our Museum Services Manager and Executive Director to support administrative and visitor services operations, while contributing to Dalnavert’s mission to promote and protect this National Historic Site in critically engaging and challenging ways. The Museum Services Coordinator will also assist with the delivery of daily museum operations including front desk duties, gift shop sales, and responding to public inquiries.

The primary tasks to be undertaken by the Museum Services Coordinator are as follows:

  • Support the Museum Services Manager and Executive Director with administrative tasks including membership management, scheduling, financial record keeping, and general office support.

  • Maintain and update membership records and databases, including data entry and record keeping

  • Deliver exceptional frontline visitor services, including welcoming visitors, answering phones, responding to the museum information line and email inquiries, and providing general information about the museum.

  • Process admissions, memberships, and gift shop sales at the front desk when volunteers are not available.

  • Assist with daily museum operations including maintaining front-of-house spaces, supporting volunteer coordination and schedules as required, and other operational duties as needed.

Skills and Qualifications

Candidates interested in this position should demonstrate the following education, experience and/or skills:

  • University or College education in Museum Studies, History, Humanities, Arts Administration, Business Administration, or a related field is an asset, or demonstrable skills and experience in a relevant professional sphere.

  • Experience with administrative tasks such as scheduling, data entry, and database management is an asset.

  • Experience in customer service or public-facing roles is strongly desired.

  • Computer proficiency including standard office software (e.g. MS Office, Google Workspace).

  • Demonstrated interest in museums, heritage, history, or cultural organizations.

  • Proficiency in spoken and written English is essential; French and/or additional language skills (including ASL and Indigenous languages) are an asset.

  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills; accuracy and attention to detail; friendly, reliable, self-motivated, and able to work independently and as part of a team.
