About Private and Group Tours of the Museum

Explore Dalnavert Museum with our general guided tour. The approximately 1-hour tour covers what life was like in Victorian Winnipeg through the lens of the Macdonald family and their servants, highlighting the museum’s gorgeous architecture and fascinating artifacts.

If your group has specific interests (ie. architecture, clothing, the lives and working conditions of the servants), please let us know. Depending on the request, we may be able to adapt the general guided tour to highlight areas of interest.

The following specialty tours, all approximately 60 minutes in length, can also be booked for private groups:

  • Death at Dalnavert (seasonal: October)

    • Learn all about Victorian funeral customs and practices, superstitions and spiritualism. With the (allegedly haunted) historic house as your backdrop, explore Victorian mourning culture and death.

    • Maximum group size: 21 people

  • Deck the Halls of Dalnavert (seasonal: December)

    • In this festive tour, travel back in time to Victorian Winnipeg and learn how Victorians celebrated Christmas by playing dangerous parlour games, eating lots of candy, and carolling—pretty similar to today!

    • Maximum group size: 21 people

  • Spinsters and Suffragists: Gender Norms and Gender Rebels in the Victorian Period

    • This specialty tour looks at the prevailing attitudes about gender and gender roles in the Victorian era, and how women, transgender individuals, and gender non-conforming individuals rebelled against those ideas.

    • Maximum group size: 21 people

  • Poverty and Prosperity: A Walk Down Early 1900s Broadway (seasonal: summer to early fall, outdoor walking tour)

    • This walking tour of downtown explores Winnipeg's roots and foundations, from periods of major growth to the present day.

    • Maximum group size: 20 people

Please note, we are unlikely to be able to accommodate large groups as walk-ups. Group tours of 10 or more must be booked in advance.

Accessibility

The upper floors of the museum are only accessible by stairs. If stairs pose a barrier, there is the option to explore the upper floors of the house with a tour guide in the Visitors' Centre through our virtual tour. Folding cane-seats can be borrowed free of charge during the visit and there is seating available throughout the museum.

Rates

The group rate (10+ people) for a standard guided tour is $8 per person (plus GST). Additional fees may apply for specialty tours. Tours booked Mondays, Tuesdays, or otherwise outside business hours (10am-5pm Wednesdays through Sundays) are subject to an additional staffing fee.

Subject to availability, self-serve tea and coffee in the Visitors’ Centre can be added to your booking for $4 per person to make the most out of your outing.
