The Architecture of Dalnavert: A Guided tour of Domestic Victorian Design
Tours Beginning July 26
Dalnavert Museum invites visitors to explore its historic 1895 residence through the lens of architectural and social history. Designed by architect Charles Henry Wheeler for Sir Hugh John Macdonald, the house stands as one of the most sophisticated expressions of the Queen Anne Revival style in Western Canada. Through its carefully composed façades and meticulously preserved interiors, Dalnavert illustrates the architectural language of late Victorian Britain as it was adapted to an emerging Winnipeg. This guided visit situates Dalnavert within broader contexts of design, domesticity, modernity, and empire, revealing how architecture reflected and shaped the cultural aspirations of late nineteenth-century Canada.
