Picture This! returns with an exploration of ectoplasm and the peculiar history of spiritualism. Beginning with a lecture on the spiritualist movement and Victorian séance culture, participants will learn about the mysterious substance believed to manifest during paranormal encounters: ectoplasm. Participants will learn how photographers created convincing ectoplasm images by employing illusion and early photographic techniques. Following the lecture, attendees are invited to a hands-on workshop to recreate ectoplasm photographs using the same methods as the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.
