About the Amindra Consort

The Amindra Consort is: Kevin Scott (harpsichord, recorder, guitar), Mark McLearon (recorders, percussion), Margaret McKenty (recorders), and Graeme Spafford (recorders, euphonium, percussion).

The beginnings of Amindra Consort go back to a potluck dinner at a Winnipeg Early Music Society event in which Kevin and Mark and a couple of others decided to meet for a music-playing exploration, which was fruitful and marked the beginning of what was then called Midwinter Consort.  Minor personnel changes occurred in with them came a change of name, the Amindra being a kind of sailing vessel and we took to it and adopted it!  Margaret was added after that, and after a stint with a cellist Graeme was brought on board primarily to bolster the low end of our sound.

We perform chamber music from the Baroque, Renaissance, and Medieval periods (12th to 18th CE). Our repertoire comprises sonatas, court and country dances, fantasias and madrigals. Favourite composers include Handel, Telemann, Corelli, Bach, Tallis, Dowland and Byrd, along with the perennially prolific Anonymous, especially where dance tunes are concerned.

Past performances include medieval feasts hosted by the Society for Creative Anachronism, Brit Café and Cook’s Creek Immaculate Conception Church, Sage Gardens’ HerbFest, Manitoba Hydro’s Festival of Trees, the 2016 Manitoba Book Awards banquet, coffeehouse appearances at Sam’s Place, Roca Jack’s and Gordie’s, and retirement and social functions.
