In the 19th century, middle-class Victorians were eager to be involved in charitable causes. They donated money and time into various philanthropic projects. When it came to helping the poor, middle-class Victorians were eager to provide a moral education to them. But what motivated Victorians to help? Did they have a hidden agenda? These questions are explored by looking at the establishment of the Strangers’ Home for Asiatics, a charitable lodging house for Indians in Victorian London.

The lectures take place in our Visitors' Centre. Each session begins at 1:30 pm and runs for about an hour.
