The Victorians loved sitting by the fire at Christmas time and reading about ghosts and ghouls. Christmas back then was not the commercial holiday we know now. It was about “darker, older, more fundamental things: winter, death, rebirth, and the rapt connection between a teller and his or her audience“
In this lecture Arlene Young answers the question: why were Victorians obsessed with ghosts...at Christmas?
The lectures take place in our Visitors' Centre. Each session begins at 1:30 pm and runs for about an hour.
