With epidemics like diphtheria, typhus and cholera, Victorians were used to seeing death; In 1861 Queen Victoria even made mourning fashionable as her black dress and darkened style home spread over the west.

Momento Mori, meaning “remember you must die”, existed before the Victorian times but was a popular trend in physical form for the Victorians. Trinkets of death existed in many forms such as lockets containing the hair of the dead, wax death masks and post-modem photography.

This lecture is taught by Professor Vanessa Warne and will focus on Memento Mori in the Victorian Era. 

The lectures take place in our Visitors' Centre. Each session begins at 1:30 pm and runs for about an hour.
